The region of Hampton Roads may be defined most broadly as being all of South Hampton Roads
and the Virginia Peninsula, the tip of the Middle Peninsula, and the corner of northeastern
North Carolina. Specifically, it includes the Southeastern Virginia cities of Chesapeake,
Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and
Williamsburg, counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Surry, Southampton,
and York, and town of Smithfield, in addition to North Carolina's Currituck County.

he Editor and Publisher of Hampton Roads Times, Irwin Berent, speaks on a wide range of topics. In addition to founding and managing the Times, Mr. Berent is the chief editor of the Encyclopedia of Norfolk series and is considered more knowledgeable of the history-geography of the city of Norfolk than any other person living today. He is also an accomplished author whose books — many of which were co-authored with Old Dominion University's professor of philosophy Rod L. Evans — have included introductions by Isaac Asimov, William F. Buckley, Jr., Steve Allen, Hugh Downs, Betty White, and other notables. His topics range from drug legalization and political conservatism to interpersonal communications and Civil War history. In 1985, he conceived and coordinated the "reunion" of the descendants of the U.S.S. Monitor and C.S.S. Virginia ("Merrimack"). His history of the Jewish community of Norfolk, written in 2000, is the classic in its field. And the online writer's software store he founded in 2001, known as Writers SuperCenter (www.WriterSuperCenter.com), is the only one of its kind on the Internet.
